About Charleston : Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant SC, an incorporated town, is a suburban community located east of the Cooper River, just minutes from downtown Charleston Mt. Pleasant was founded as a fishing village. Although the town has developed into a modern suburb of Charleston, the village has the look and feel of a small town. The village borders on Charleston harbor with views across the water of downtown Charleston. Picturesque Shem Creek is located in Mt. Pleasant. It is home to the area's shrimp fleet, an important Charleston industry, as well as some of the finest seafood restaurants in the Southeast. Sweetgrass basket making has been a part of the Mount Pleasant community for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves from West Africa, basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation. They were made from the soft, pliable grass commonly called Sweetgrass because of its pleasant fragrance, similar to the smell of fresh hay. Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. Baskets may be purchased from the artists everyday at roadside basket stands on US Highway 17 North in Mount Pleasant.
