Summerville beauty is mirrored in her motto, "The Flower Town in the Pines." Since the early 1900's day tourists have flocked to the town during early spring to enjoy millions of spring blossoms, particularly azaleas, in private and public gardens, including the mid-town Azalea Park. It is the home of the Flowertown Festival, held annually each spring and attracting 10's of thousands of visitors. The azalea gardens are stunning, as are most residences at this beautiful time of year.
Summerville is located northwest of the City of Charleston and has become one of the most popular relocation destinations in the Charleston Metro area. Why? More affordable housing, good schools and great infrastructure. Summerville's roads have kept pace with its development and traffic tie-ups are not as prevalent as in other areas. The area has grown by 35% in the last five years, making it the fastest growing town in the state. Many new residential communities are being built in the Summerville area.
A popular retreat during the Victorian era, Summerville retains much of the charm it acquired during the romantic period. Beautiful Victorian homes and manicured lawns and gardens are a signature of the community, along with antique shops that line the main street. Old town Summerville is entered in the National Historic register and has counted among its summer residents many noteworthy people including Elizabeth Arden, Ephrem Zimbalist, and Theodore Roosevelt.
